Reporting directly to the Team lead of Early Childhood Development, the Early Childhood Development (ECD) staff will design and execute daily programming for children ages 0-10, and their families. ECD staff will have knowledge and understanding of child development to provide developmentally appropriate play experiences within a trauma-informed and cultural lens. ECD staff will provide on-site referrals and educational resources to the parents or primary caregiver of the infant/child. This position will include a combination of supporting families at the main shelter site, at the satellite shelter site and in the community.
In concert with Team Lead, ECD development of appropriate programming for children and their families, while maintaining a safe and engaging learning environment
Support parents by providing one-on-one coaching, modeling and parenting strategies from an evidence- based approach
Prepare and facilitate a mid-morning snack for children participating in planned programming including afterschool snack
Clean and sanitize the Kidz Zone toys and materials daily
Attend and contribute to the weekly team meetings.
Develop and execute recreational activities (field trips) following all IFTC procedures to ensure the safety of all participants. This may be at either shelter site – main and satellite
Observe children for signs of learning challenges or emotional needs
Be familiar with all Inn from the Cold emergency procedures and keep up to date with IFTC and AHS COVID-19 protocols and procedures
Other duties shall be assigned as required.
Maintain provincial standards and regulations and keep up to date with current child care philosophy.
Skills & Abilities
Develop programs and activities that are culturally appropriate, introduce math and literacy concepts and provide various experiences for children including songs, games and storytelling.
Provide input into activity planning
Establish routines for children; providing them with positive guidance and building their esteem.
Clearly and effectively communicate in a manner that children understand.
Develop and maintain respectful, cooperative working relationships with staff to contribute to the integrated, seamless delivery of services to children, families and communities
Collaborate and build positive rapport with community agencies
Understand HOMES – client data base system, and respond promptly to emails.
Ensure accuracy, confidentiality and safekeeping of agency records according to the Freedom of Information & Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP).
Experience and Skills:
Early Childhood Education Diploma (Level 1,2 & 3) an asset
Minimum two years’ experience working with children and families
Current CPR and First Aid Certificates relevant to the age group being cared for.
Proven ability to successfully work with children and their parents in a sensitive, effective and professional manner.
Working knowledge of child development theories and practices.
Strong working knowledge of relevant legislation, policies and procedures to ensure that children are supervised and safe at all times.
Demonstrated ability to create safe and appropriate activities for children.
Computer literacy, including effective working skills of MS Word, Excel and e-mail required.
Good organizational, time management and prioritization skills.
Strong work ethics, sound judgement and reasoning skills, along with a commitment to discretion and client and staff confidentiality
Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills that allow one to work effectively in a diverse working environment.
Physically able to perform all assigned tasks.
Knowledge of social issues surrounding poverty and homelessness would be an asset.
Driver’s license and reliable car is an asset
